Job description

Job Summary: We are seeking a dedicated and skilled 1:1 British Sign Language (BSL) Tutor to provide personalized language instruction to individuals who are learning British Sign Language. This role involves tailoring lessons to meet the unique needs of the learner, ensuring progress, and creating a supportive learning environment that fosters confidence and skill development. The ideal candidate will be passionate about BSL and have experience teaching or tutoring in a one-on-one setting.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Provide one-on-one BSL instruction to learners at varying levels, ensuring lessons are engaging, clear, and effective.

  • Develop and implement individualized lesson plans based on the learner's goals, proficiency, and learning style.

  • Assess learner progress regularly and adjust teaching methods as needed to ensure continued improvement.

  • Foster a positive and inclusive learning environment that encourages communication and learning.

  • Provide feedback and support to learners and, where applicable, their families or support networks.

  • Maintain a record of the learner's progress, including achievements and areas for improvement.

  • Stay current with developments in BSL and teaching methods to continually improve the learning experience.

  • Adapt lessons to accommodate learners with specific needs, including those with additional learning requirements or disabilities.

Qualifications:

  • Proficiency in British Sign Language (Level 2 or above required, Level 3 or higher preferred).

  • Prior experience in tutoring or teaching BSL is highly desirable.

  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to build rapport with learners.

  • Patience, empathy, and the ability to tailor teaching methods to individual needs.

  • A passion for teaching and helping others achieve their language learning goals.

  • DBS check (Disclosure and Barring Service) or equivalent, if applicable.

Desirable Skills:

  • Knowledge of Deaf culture and an understanding of the challenges faced by D/deaf individuals.

  • Experience working with diverse learners, including those with disabilities or additional learning needs.

  • Ability to use technology to support learning, such as video calls, educational apps, or online resources.
